This is something that has given me some concern at times. It's obvious that different Uke's have very different idea's on what is appropriate resistance and what is to little. I am curious on others opinions before I post my own.

Joe,
As with most of our art, I'd say that you need to read the situation. When Tori is still learning the mechanics or trying to refine some aspect of the technique, don't resist. When Uke and Tori are at similar stages of learning, and if both agree, then some resistance is fine. When doing freeplay, resist away. When teaching, if I feel that Uke is being sloppy in something that I want them to correct, then I will resist to demonstrate the principle.
Lastly, protect yourself when you resist - some Tori will panic and jerk, which can result in damage to Uke. Make sure that Tori understands you will be providing resistance before you start working out.
